CogniLog is way cool

Sometimes a simple animation just makes me exclaim, “Wow!”  The CogniLog system below is a great example.

Ludger Overmeyer and his team at the University of Hannover are developing a conveyor table comprised of single-roller cells, which use decentralized control to move cartons of different sizes, in different directions, at different times, to get them where they need to go. Make sure to watch the entire video—it is impressive!

What is interesting to me is not what the system is doing, in particular, but that it does it in an incredibly compact space. Imagine how much standard conveyor and how many diverters one would have to assemble to accomplish this type of sortation. And the fact that the control scheme is decentralized is really amazing.

Here’s hoping such systems find their way to market someday.
